Clean Diesel Fuel

15 Feb 2025 17 Share
Various technologies are being developed that will enable large trucks to transport heavy goods in an environmentally friendly manner. The two major alternatives are battery-powered electric motors or synthetic fuels. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion in Zurich have developed a process that efficiently produces clean Diesel fuel called “HyFiT”. It is created ecologically from biomass or carbon dioxide, and would provide clean energy for conventional Diesel engines. This new fuel could be a breakthrough. Over the life of a vehicle it is projected to create about the same amount of pollution as an electric truck. This includes the ecological destruction caused by manufacturing electric truck batteries. The alternative of trying to develop heavy electric trucks has inherent problems. The batteries would have to be extremely large, thus limiting the weight of the cargo, and shortening the distance that the truck could go before needing to recharge. Synthetic fuel avoids all of these problems because it will be used in existing vehicles. This means that the infrastructure for fuelling and servicing the trucks already exists, so there is no need to build massive recharging stations.
