Limits on beach clubs in Ibiza

The Balearic Parliament has voted to give the individual island consells the option of regulating or prohibiting the opening of new beach clubs. The previous law of 2012, approved by the Popular Party, allowed restaurants and beach bars to become beach clubs without applying for a special license. The Socialist party (PSOE) of Ibiza put forward this amendment to curb the situation of chaos on the island with regard to these types of establishments, In fact, the goal of this party is to ban them.

The Consell de Ibiza will meet with the town councils to study the situation of each one and decide what to do with the beach clubs in their municipalities. However, this new amendment is not retroactive which means that beach clubs that are already open cannot be banned. Socialist deputy, Enric Casanova, stressed the importance of this amendment because it gives local institutions control over their land again. He also says that they are in negotiations to further limit the club and disco activities.

Action has already been taken by the town hall of San José to ban DJs and live music from sixteen beach clubs in their territory. Included in the ban are well-known venues such as Blue Marlin, Bora Bora, Nassau and Coco Beach. This crackdown is in response to numerous complaints about excessive noise and illegal restrictions of beach use. Both locals and tourists have reported that the clubs have closed large sections of the public beaches for the exclusive use of their clients. To enforce these restrictions they use aggressive intimidation by security guards to keep regular people out of their areas.
