AEMIF is a non-profit association here on Ibiza, that specializes in helping people affected by Multiple Sclerosis, Acquired Brain Damage and Spinal Cord Injury. This team of dedicated professionals works tirelessly to improve the lives of these people and their families. The humanitarian mission of AEMIF is to reduce the impact of these conditions through comprehensive care that includes neurology, physical therapy, psychology, speech therapy, occupational therapy and social work. 

Physical therapy generates better control of the body’s motor functions, which is essential for greater functionality and autonomy. Neuropsychology studies how the brain causes neurological disorders, so that we know better how to minimize them through memory and coordination exercises. AEMIF also uses classical psychology to create strategies and tools to deal with the practical problems which arise from neurological disorders. This can effectively change behaviours and lead to better management of emotions. Neuro-speech therapy is available for those who have a neurological disorder that causes problems with language, speech or swallowing. In addition, each person is given a nutrition plan that is designed specifically for improving their personal neurological pathology. There are also ongoing consultations on social and family conditions that may be hindering a person’s development.

The excellent Day Care Program has a wide variety of activities, and it also provides needed time off for their families. On another level AEMIF offers Integral Care for the Promotion of Autonomy (SAIPAP). This is a special guidance and support program to develop personal autonomy through interdisciplinary work. The Day Care Program is contracted by the Consell de Ibiza, but much of the support for SAIPAP comes from private donations. More help is needed from foundations, companies and personal donors. AEMIF has been declared of “Public Interest” by the Ministry of the Interior, so donations are given a very favourable tax treatment. The wonderful work of this association is in pursuit of a vision… a vision to give loving care to the people in Ibiza and Formentera who suffer from these problems. It is a noble endeavour that we are very fortunate to have on our island, and it is bringing new light to many lives.
