The Spanish Wing Walker

21 Feb 2024 18 Share
As a young girl growing up in Bilbao, Ainhoa Sánchez dreamed of dancing and flying. She became an excellent dancer and acrobat, but flying had faded from her life - until she saw a photo of a woman doing acrobatics on top of an airplane. This inspired Ainhoa to quit her job and move to England where she could learn to be a wing walker. She first studied with a professional pilot who was experienced at showing people how to ride on top of the wings of his vintage biplane. As soon as she became accustomed to the altitude and the air pressure, Ainhoa began to experiment with doing classical dance moves in the air. A wing walker must have excellent composure and grace to coordinate her movements with the precise flying manoeuvres of the pilot.

To perfect her craft, Ainhoa worked with the best professionals in England and California. She debuted as a professional wing walker at the International Airshow in 2013. At that time wing walking exhibitions were not legal in Spain, so she performed for the next three seasons in the United Kingdom. Her goal was to bring this to her home country, and eventually she was able to found her own aerial circus here in Spain. Ainhoa personally designs all of her flight costumes, and creates the choreography that she performs on top of the wings. Her childhood dreams have come true, as her life has become an elegant dance in the sky.
