Small Nuclear Reactors

15 Jun 2025 20 Share
Small modular reactors (SMRs) are an ecological and economical way to provide clean nuclear power for reliable electricity. They can produce up to one-third of the generating capacity of traditional large nuclear reactors, which is ideal for certain situations. SMRs have been powering submarines and other naval ships for decades, and now they are becoming an important part of the movement to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels for electricity. The smaller size and modular design of SMRs gives them several advantages: 1) lower building cost, 2) faster construction time, 3) can fit in difficult locations, 4) can be expanded relatively easily. Prefabricated units of SMRs are manufactured and then shipped to be installed at the site. This makes them much more affordable to build than large power reactors which are custom designed. If energy demand rises, they can easily increase capacity by adding another SMR. These reactors come in various sizes depending on what is needed. The larger ones are used to replace existing fossil fuel power plants, or to provide electricity to isolated residential areas. Smaller SMRs are ideal for powering energy-intensive industrial sites like desalinisation plants.
