Redwood Forests Protected

We have all seen photos of the massive redwood trees of California, and now many of these marvels of nature are being protected by the native people who first revered them. A recent development in this trend saw the non-profit Save the Redwoods League orchestrate the donation of coastal redwood forestland to the Native Americans of the Inter-Tribal Sinkyone Wilderness Council. The Sinkyone people will resume guardianship of the land that they lived on for hundreds of years before European settlers came. The tribe is committed to maintaining the natural state of these amazing trees, and to the prevention of commercial timber operations or any other form of exploitation.

The tribal head of the Council accepted the transfer saying, “Today I stand on the shoulders of our ancestors, to bring them honour, and to honour their traditions. As I listen to the wind I can feel their presence.” The president of Save the Redwoods League affirmed that “The Sinkyone Council represents the indigenous people who were the original stewards of this land for many centuries. Their connection to the redwood forest is longstanding and deep. We believe the best way to permanently protect and heal this land is through tribal stewardship.”
