New Australian Marine Parks

The Australian government is creating two massive new marine protected areas that cover an expanse of over 740,000 square kilometres. The nature reserves will be established around Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean to the northwest of continental Australia. These islands are globally recognized to be among the most significant natural wonders in the world. “There’s nowhere like them on Earth,” says Michelle Grady, director of The Pew Charitable Trusts. They feature thriving rainforests, de- serted beaches and coral reefs which provide a haven for unique and rare seabirds and marine life.

Oceans across the globe are in deep trouble from pollution, overfishing, habitat loss and the impact of climate change. Establishing marine parks to provide a safe haven for marine life is critical to keeping our oceans from reaching a tipping point. These new parks will bring the percentage of Australian waters under protection from 37% to 45%. Conservation groups around the world are aiming for the protection of 30% of global oceans and land mass by 2030.
