The goal is to make cycling the primary mode of transport for at least 20% of the residents by 2030, and to ensure that 80% of homes are within one kilometre of a cycle route. The inspiration for this project began during the pandemic, when Milan took the first steps toward making the city easier for walking and cycling. They turned some city centre roads into cycle lanes, designated other streets for pedestrians and imposed a speed limit of 30 kilometres per hour for all vehicles. The city council says that, “The Cambio plan takes this to the next level as it will lead to less emissions, eased traffic, and better road safety.”
