Mexico creates a giant marine reserve

In a move to protect wildlife from commercial fishing, whilst also promoting eco tourism, the government of Mexico has created the largest ocean reserve in North America. The Revillagigedo Archipelago, situated southeast of Baja California, has been declared a national park. All fishing activities are now prohibited, and hotel infrastructure will be constructed on each of the park’s four volcanic islands. The Environment ministry will carry out surveillance, training activities and environmental education for fishermen, whilst the Mexican Navy will enforce the fishing prohibitions and issue sanctions against offenders. It is expected that the creation of this marine park will aid in the preservation of hundreds of species of animals and plants that make their homes in and around the Revillagigedo Archipelago. These include giant rays, humpback whales, sea turtles and migratory birds.
