The Portuguese island of Madeira is looking to capitalize on the increasing number of a unique type of traveller: the digital nomads. These are people who earn a living working online in various locations, rather than at a fixed business location. Some work at coffee shops, public libraries or co-working spaces, but the real nomads travel to foreign countries. It gives them the luxury being able to travel while still earning a living. These are the ones being targeted by Madeira where they have created an entire area dedicated to attracting them. This ‘Digital Nomad Village’ offers affordable housing, fast internet and free office space.

The digital nomad lifestyle became popular in recent years as internet connectivity expanded and jobs became less location-dependent. The Covid restrictions made even more people aware of the possibility
of working away from an office. Madeira’s feeling that they are uniquely placed to take advantage of this trend is reflected in their brochure. “Madeira has the perfect conditions to attract digital nomads with its natural beauty, activities in nature, culture, and fantastic weather throughout the year.”
