Ibiza Water Conservation

15 Jun 2025 19 Share
The government of Ibiza is taking strong action to protect our limited water resources. Setting the tone is President Vicent Marí who says that the high quality water which comes from desalination or the underground aquifers can no longer be used in wasteful ways. “This water must only be for human consumption.” The continual increase of water usage in the tourist season has led the administration to implement various measures to deal with the situation. It is the wasteful water consumers who will mostly be targeted, and one example of this are new regulations about irrigating the large gardens of the island's villas. From now on this will only be allowed with recycled water. To make this feasible the government is building three new water regeneration plants. To further crack down on wasteful use, they are installing meters for all large consumers so that the amount of water they take from the ground will be monitored at all times. There are also projects to increase the supply for human consumption by expanding the Santa Eulalia desalination plant, and building a fourth desalination plant near San Jose. President Mari has made it clear that, "Even if you can afford to waste water, we will not allow you to take it from the people who need it to live."
