Electric Car Sales Fall

15 Feb 2025 20 Share
The conversion to electric vehicles (EVs) in the Balearics is not going as fast as the government expected. During 2024 the sales of EVs fell by about 20% compared to the previous year. On the other hand, statistics reveal that hybrid models are very popular on these islands. Their sales increased by 32% last year, and total sales were 300% more than EVs. The reasons for this are fairly obvious. Electric cars are still very expensive, even with government subsidies. In addition, the charging network is not sufficient, and this causes “range anxiety” - the fear of running out of battery power before reaching a charging station. Most people who want to buy a car that is better for the environment find that the hybrid is a better and more affordable alternative. A hybrid car has both a petrol engine and an electric motor that work together. This gives it much greater fuel efficiency and less pollution than petrol cars. Hybrids are self-charging, so the battery never needs to be plugged into a charger. Obviously there is no ‘range anxiety’ because you can always stop at a petrol station to refill the gasoline engine.
