Electric Vertical Takeoff & Landing aircraft (eVTOLs) are the next frontier in air travel. These fully electric planes look like giant drones that are able to take off and land in a small space. This makes them perfect for air taxis or private sky limos that can fly to and from airports, or “vertiports” in congested cities.

These planes are much quieter and more energy efficient than helicopters. Several manufacturers have designed eVTOL models that need to complete flight testing in order to receive certification to fly commercially. It is expected that most will be approved some time in 2024 or 2025. UPS in the US already has certification to fly their eVTOL for deliveries in 2024.

It looks like Ibiza might be on the leading edge of this new way to travel. The NetxNorth company successfully used this type of air taxi at the Qatar World Cup, and now they are coming to the Balearic Islands. Their plan is to offer internal flights as well as trips between some of the islands, with planes that can carry up to five passengers. The company points out that, "This is a more sustainable transport alternative than traditional forms of mobility. The use of clean energy to power the eVTOL batteries eliminates the negative impact on the environment". This type of flight in electric aircraft, that operates outside of conventional airports, needs authorization from the European Union Agency for Aviation Safety (EASA). NetxNorth hopes to be approved for flights in 2024.
