“Bicycle Highway” with Solar Panels

15 Apr 2025 15 Share
South Korea is experimenting with a way to combine healthy transportation with the production of clean solar energy. The ‘bicycle highway’ has 32 km of bike lanes that run in the middle of a busy six lane highway. The bike lanes have a roof that is completely covered with solar panels. It not only shields cyclists from the sun and rain, but also generates more than enough electricity to power the lighting of the highway and its electric vehicle charging stations. Cyclists use subterranean tunnels to enter and exit the bike lanes. This is a great boost to their safety, as they can get on and off the bikeway without having to cross the vehicle traffic. Another safety feature is that the cyclists are shielded from the traffic by strong barriers on each side.
