Sourdough for bread and other baked goods has been around for ages, but in recent years it has become trendy - and for very good reasons. First of all, the taste of this artisan style bread is amazing. It has a unique flavour, aroma and consistency that will keep you coming back for more. As if that was not enough, it is also beneficial to your health on several levels. Sourdough starter is created by naturally fermenting flour and water. This process breaks down some of the gluten and makes it easier to digest. When made with high fibre whole grains it gives you even more gut-friendly benefits. Unlike commercial bread which has preservatives to keep it fresh, sourdough can be made without preservatives. The healthy bacteria in the fermented sourdough starter preserves it naturally. 
 
These beneficial bacteria also help to regulate your blood-sugar level by allowing your body to absorb the food more slowly. Perhaps most interesting of all was a study in 2019, which concluded that sourdough contributes to healthy aging. They found that the fermented ingredients provide the body with antioxidants, along with anti-diabetic and anti-hypertensive compounds. All of these elements contribute to staying healthy as we age.
