COMPOSTING GARDEN WASTE

(Lavoisier – chemist, S.XVIII) Composting accelerates the transformation process that nature accomplishes in its normal cycle.
The first phase is the grinding: the finer it is, the faster it decomposes, but the larger pieces facilitate the oxygenation of the compost.
Humidity is important, but too much water creates bad odours and there is´nt enough water, the micro organisms cannot do their work.
The beginning temperature (70 º) is obtained from fermentation, eliminating all of the pathogenic elements and the seeds. The temperature at the end of the process will be 35 to 40 ° controlling the oxygenation and the humidity by watering. A minimum of four months is necessary for fermentation and a final sifting.
A compost of woody material decomposes slowly and produces a large quantity of humus; however, it liberates fewer nutrients than a compost of grassy material and leaves.
