World’s Longest 3D Printed Bridge

The city of Nijmegen in the Netherlands was named a European Green Capital in 2019, and they have continued that tradition by completing the world’s longest 3D-printed bridge. It spans 29 meters across a canal, which surpasses the previous record held by a bridge in China. The bridge has a striking appearance with sculpted conical feet that give it the shape of a giant caterpillar. It was constructed by engineering firms working together with the government, and it demonstrates the advantages that come with 3D printing construction. This method uses far less material than traditional building techniques, and offers greater creative possibilities for designers.

The printing company designed the bridge on a computer and printed it piece by piece before assembling it on the site. The construction required 50% less materials because the printer only deposits concrete where it is absolutely necessary for structural integrity. Furthermore, the mould and design will always be available on the printer’s website. If a similar bridge is needed in the future, it could be quickly commissioned and printed with only minor tweaks. This would save a great deal in the costs of design, surveying, and consulting.
