One of the great joys of Ibiza is that there are so many wonderful places to walk or hike. Throughout the island you will find trails that explore the coastlines, forests and spectacular lookout points. Even at the height of the tourist season, when the beaches are packed, you can hike for hours without seeing any people. There are trails available in all different degrees of difficulty, ranging from easy flat walks to challenging long hikes in the hills. Let’s begin by looking at three of the simpler walks.

Starting at the far right side of Salinas Beach, we walk along the water toward a Pirate Tower in the distance. After the last restaurant (Sa Trinxa), the trail continues to follow the coastline, passing several small coves with ornate carvings in the limestone. The tower looms ever larger, and when we reach it you can see the islands of Espalmador and Formentera shimmering in the sea to your right. To your left is the long stretch of Es Cavallet Beach. You can either go back the way we came, or wander through the Las Salinas National Park to return to the starting point.

There are two relatively easy walks that begin at Cala Conta. One follows the coast to the right toward a Pirate Tower, and continues through the woods until you get to Cala Bassa beach. The other walk starts by going left from Cala Conta, and following the coast until you come to a small bay. There you will find steps going down to a cavern that is cut through the rocks. It is like a natural stage with an amazing view to the sea. But that is not even the best highlight of the walk. Continuing on, you walk down to Cala Colodar, and then up the hill on the opposite side. There you come to an ornate door standing by itself, and through that door you see what is called the “Ibiza Stonehenge”. This is an incredible work of art that was installed by part-time Ibiza resident Guy Laliberté, the founder of Cirque du Soleil. The monument is actually called ‘Time and Space: The Speed of Light’, and it is made up of 13 massive basalt columns arranged in a semicircle. The 20 meter tall centre column is topped with 23 carat gold leaf. It is clearly the most dramatic art installation on all of Ibiza.

For those who want a more challenging hike, here are two that are of medium difficulty. From Cala Llonga beach you follow the road that goes up the right side, and keep on going up as it turns into a dirt trail. Near the top it flattens out and you will see a small path that goes to the right. This will take you to an ancient Carthaginian ceremonial site, and one of the most fantastic views on Ibiza. Another hike with a bit of a climb goes to Es Portixol - a beautiful pristine bay that can only be reached by foot or boat. Drive to the Isla Blanca community near San Miguel, and park where the road stops. Start walking down the old broken road until it comes to a path that continues along the coastline. Eventually it will take you to this stunning bay. Stop to enjoy the tranquillity, and maybe take a swim before heading back.

There are several websites and apps where you can find descriptions of the many walks that are available on Ibiza. If you prefer a guided walk you can join with one of the organized walking groups that can be found online.
