The change of Cala de Bou

The town of Cala de Bou, also known as Bahía de Portmany, is located on a rectangular strip of land linking Sant Antoni with Port des Torrent along the coast to the west. Although it is a continuity of the urban area of Sant Antoni, it actually comes under the municipality of Sant Josep and the Sant Agustí parish. The change of municipality occurs at the beach of es Pouet. Starting in the 1970s, the town experienced a demographic phenomenon due to the tourism boom and its population came to be made up mostly of people from the peninsula and foreign countries. Areas of the coast which had once been of little or no value quickly became more expensive and built up. Mainly during the ‘80s, the landscape transformed from a rural environment with vegetable gardens and livestock farmers to being filled with shops, restaurants, hotels, apartment blocks etc. The demographic growth over the last years continues to be considerable: it has gone from 2,825 inhabitants in the year 2000 to more than 8,000 in 2017, according to the National Institute of Statistics. Moreover, the renovation and opening of exclusive hotels, as well as the construction project for a promenade to merge with the one in Sant Antoni, indicate that this area is booming.

Enjoying the sunset from one of the beaches that make up the coastline of Cala de Bou, both in summer and in winter, is always rewarding.
