During the summer months of July and August Formentera's population triples, and the number of vehicles on the road becomes excessive for such a small island. The Formentera Council has taken action to limit the number of vehicles in order to “maintain environmental harmony and make sure that visitors and islanders can enjoy the tranquillity they expect to find.” From 1 July through 31 August 2019 the maximum number of vehicles that can be brought to the island will be 12,450. Of this number 5,200 can be cars and 7,250 motorbikes. There will be no quads, caravans nor motor homes allowed. Rental vehicles make up by far the largest part of the allowed total with 2,700 cars and 7,000 motorbikes.

The following vehicles are exempt from these regulations: electric or zero-emission, hybrids, vehicles of Formentera residents & second home owners, vehicles of Ibiza residents employed on Formentera, and people with reduced mobility. There are further exemptions for various types of vehicles used in business.

Those wishing to bring a vehicle to the island must reserve in advance. Reservations are given on a first come first served basis, so if the quota is already full when you try to reserve you will be rejected. When a reservation is accepted you receive an electronic receipt with permission to enter, drive and park on the island in the specified vehicle and for a given number of days. There is no need to print this out because your vehicle's plate number is used for tracking purposes.

Vehicles with reservations will be subject to a user fee of one euro per day for cars and 50 centimos per day for motorbikes.
