In 1963, the Diario reported somewhat disparagingly on the sudden influx of unsavoury beings they nicknamed “els peluts” (the hairy ones). In fact, Ibiza, no stranger to offering visitors refuge over the centuries, was now welcoming in evaders of the Vietnam War draft. With them came “flower power”, which originated as symbolic action of protest against the Vietnam War. Naturally, their hippiesque drug experimentation, naked bathing, and general abandon were met with a certain degree of scorn by the authorities and traditionalists. However, the younger generation were tantalised – charmed by the new sense of freedom they brought to the island. Within no time at all, there were many that recognised the hippie philosophy as something far greater than just getting stoned.

Soon, minds broadened to this view, and the acceptance for the “peluts” grew. By the mid-70s, hippiedom had reached its peak here, with travellers collecting and selling artefacts to fund their travels, and embracing Ibiza as part of their global hippie trail. Bar Anita, San Carlos, opened its post office window to hoards of hippies queuing to collect their money orders. Meanwhile, the village priest, Pep Negre (known as the “hippies’ priest”), allowed them to take refuge under the arches of the church, and perform their music inside. In 1973, the Santa Eulalia region widened its hand of hospitality, with hotel Punta Arabí (Es Canar) inviting them in to sell their artefacts under the shade of their pine groves; and so the island’s first hippie market was born, and has grown exponentially since. Las Dalias, already long since famed for seamlessly blending hippies, holidaymakers and locals together in revelry, followed suit 26 years ago, with a hippie market and, from 1999, their weekly night, Namaste, embracing world culture and the flower power spirit to the max.

No one is more respectful and appreciative of this official recognition than Juanito: “We’ve been independently exhibiting at the tourism fairs and travel markets for 10 years. We’ve always had to keep our promotional operation small, and work within a modest budget.” However, in 2013, Ibiza and Formentera were given their own independent area of promotion under the Baleares umbrella, and the hippie markets were afforded promotional investment from the tourist board, Consell d’Eivissa and Santa Eulalia town council. Last year, they circulated the London, Madrid and Berlin tourist fairs, with one of three days dedicated to the hippie markets (Las Dalias and Punta Arabí) at the World Travel Market: “This was another world. With the support of the tourist board and local authorities behind us, we could up our game.” Juanito enlisted Jon Michell to arrange music, ambience and décor, designed to emanate the colourful sounds, visuals and spirit of the hippie market and Namaste; enthralling visitors and collaborators alike with a compelling dose of flower power spirit. “It was like a mini festival in itself, and caused quite a stir, really putting a positive spotlight on Ibiza and its hippie movement.”

And so it seems that the enthusiasm for Ibiza’s hippie markets is not only growing locally, but globally. No one is happier about this recent turnaround than Jon Michell, who first visited the island in 1971, and moved here permanently in 1987 – remaining a keen observer of the hippie movement throughout. “Rather than the slightly persecutory views of before, where hippies would cower under the glare of discrimination, society is finally acknowledging its debt toward a generation that we owe a lot to for the freedoms we enjoy today.” Jon Michell is also quick to praise the authorities’ contribution in this, “I give an enormous amount of credit to the fact that they have taken this pragmatic step. Enough time has passed that Ibiza can embrace the hippie invasion as part of its culture and promote it with enthusiasm. Sex and drugs were only ever going to sell for so long. This is about highlighting the real soul of the island. The seeds of rebelliousness, tolerance, individuality, vision, integrity, and optimism planted by the hippies have taken root, and their legacy has proudly blossomed into providing a truly powerful and unique promotional perspective for the island.” •
