Balearic Government to ban diesel cars in 2025

The Balearic Government will ban the entry and purchase of diesel cars to the islands beginning in 2025, and gasoline cars by 2035. The aim is to make the entire archipelago fleet electric by 2050. These bans will not only affect new car registrations, but also visitors who bring their cars to the islands by sea. The measure excludes motorcycles, cars and vans that already circulate on the islands, and these may be driven until the end of their useful life. This measure also affects the car rental companies which must begin to incorporate electric vehicles into their fleets by 2020. They will begin with a minimum of 2% electric cars, and must get to 100% by 2035.
These measures are included in the draft of the Law on Climate Change and Energy Transition presented by the Balearic Government. We are the first regional government to take action against diesel cars, whose emissions of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are largely responsible for the pollution in large cities. In addition, the plan envisions these other environmental goals: the closure of all the thermal power stations on the islands; 100% of energy production coming from renewable energies by 2050; and a 90% reduction in carbon emissions. With this proposal the Balearic Islands intend to be a positive example of how to protect the environment.
