This is the time we can say that winter ends and spring begins.
In Ibiza, in February, plants are still sleeping or in winter lethargy, but soon the day lengthens and the sun begins to warm the earth.
So, if we still haven't pruned, we still have time with almost all plants.

Concerning pruning we must bear in mind:

- If it's a young plant we will do training pruning, guiding the first shoots and cutting the badly oriented ones. Later, when the plant has its form, the branch clearing pruning is done, removing the crossed branches.

- If the tree is old we observe that internal branches always dry out, meaning they do not receive much light. Cut it right back and watch how the plant reacts by coming back with strong new shoots, thus rejuvenating the tree.
In March we have to fertilize, because the new shoots start and need organic fertilizers or minerals. The most widely used fertilizer is Nitrofosca, which are little blue balls.

In April we have to pay attention to aphid attacks, which in just a few days can devour new shoots with the resulting damage to the appearance of the plant and decreases the flowering and fruit production. This is easy to fight with light insecticides that are not too strong as aphids are very weak. Use of the same product should be avoided as they become resistant.

We might also be confronted with fungus attacks, of which there are different types and treatments. For the person who doesn't know exactly what is affecting the plant, the best thing to do is to take a small branch to your garden centre and they will advise you on the best treatment.

Lastly, at the beginning of spring it is important to turn over the soil, to air it, mix in the fertilizer and remove the weeds.

Now we can also plant the bulbs that flower in summer or plants like roses, daisies, aromatic plants, fruit trees, etc.
