Danny was walking out of New York subway station when he noticed a small bundle on the floor. At first he thought it was a doll, but then he saw a tiny leg move. Danny examined it closer and discovered it was a newborn baby, with the umbilical cord still attached. He picked it up and ran to the nearest police station. The baby boy was immediately rushed to the hospital, where Danny was joined by his partner Pete, as they waited anxiously to see if the baby would survive. They found out that the boy was only a few hours old when Danny had discovered him, and would not have lived much longer. Fortunately he was brought to the hospital in time to save his life.
Because of the circumstances, Danny and Pete felt a strong connection to this child, so they volunteered to be his foster parents. They named him Kevin, and two years later they were able to formally adopt the boy. Fast forward 19 years to the Spring of 2021, when they were watching as proud parents when Kevin, now 21 years old, graduated from university. Pete recently published a book about their amazing story called “Our Subway Baby”. He and Danny believe strongly that Kevin was meant to be found by them. They have always explained to Kevin that he should not have bad feelings about his mother. "We told him from a very young age that his mother abandoned him out of love - so that he could be found and cared for. She left you where you could be found by us."
