India is leading the way in helping its children to overcome negative emotions by introducing a ‘happiness curriculum’ for students... and none other than the Dalai Lama is heading up the initiative. This class seeks to improve the students’ physical and mental wellbeing by alleviating emotions like anger, hate and jealousy. Speaking about the plan the Dalai Lama said: “Only India has the ability to combine modern education with ancient knowledge to achieve the fulfilment of human emotions.” He added that, “Such a combination will pave the way for physical and mental wellbeing, solving troubles caused due to negative and destructive emotions.”

All students at government schools, from nursery school up to class VIII, will participate in a daily ‘happiness’ class of 45 minutes, beginning with a five minute meditation. Delhi’s education minister Arvind Kejriwal said the plan is a significant step in improving the present curriculum and producing “good human beings”.
