GLUCOSAMINE IN RELATION TO JOINT HEALTH

12 Feb 2023 23 Share
Glucosamine in its natural form exists in all our joints and muscles. It is an important ingredient to daily mobility as well as cartilage, tendon and ligament health. It is essential for the production of new cartilage and synovial fluid (joints oil). It can strengthen the centre of intervertebral discs and is also needed for the healthy formation of nails, tendons, skin, eyes, bone, ligaments and mucous membranes.

Glucosamine sulphate is naturally produced by the body. The natural production by the body is a slow process. When our joints are injured, larger quantities of glucosamine, than what our body can supply, may be necessary. For this reason it is frequently taken orally as a nutritional supplement.
Glucosamine sulphate can improve joint problems associated with sports injuries and arthritis. A 3 year test with 212 people, compared the effects of glucosamine sulphate against a placebo on the long-term progression of knee osteoarthritis. Those taking the placebo showed progressive narrowing of the knee joint space while those taking glucosamine sulphate showed no significant loss of joint space. They enjoyed significant improvements in pain and disability which were sustained over the 3 year testing period.

Many tests have confirmed that glucosamine sulphate has been more successful than other non-steroidal anti-inflamatory drugs. No significant side effects have been reported, however it should not be used in pregnancy, as the effects have not yet been investigated.
