The Benefits of Coconut Oil

By Sabina Brownstein
Coconut oil and shredded coconut are important ingredients for optimal health and wellness. Coconut oil consists mostly of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) which are not stored as fat like other oils, but instead are easy for the body to use as energy. The MCTs help to keep your heart healthy by raising the levels of HDL (good cholesterol) and lowering LDL (bad cholesterol). Coconut oil is also rich in lauric acid which is well-known for its antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiviral properties. Using shredded coconut with your food gives you the benefits of MCTs plus a good source of dietary fibre... and it tastes great.

Coconut oil is also the healthiest choice for cooking because it does not oxidize when heated as most oils do, and it also stays fresh longer. This versatile oil is not only an important food - it is also a great personal care product. Use it as a skin moisturizer before and after sun or anytime. After shaving its antiseptic properties will soothe any cuts and leave skin smoother. You can also put it on your hair to restore lost moisture and shine. •
