Super foods

By Sabina Brownstein
Eating healthy food is about the most important thing you can do to keep your body strong and vibrant. There are certain foods that are so rich in nutrients and antioxidants that they are called “Super Foods”, and adding them to your diet will greatly improve your overall health. Some of the best ones are easy to find in the fresh food markets here on Ibiza. Avocadoes, broccoli, kiwi, bee pollen and fresh berries are all incredibly good for you. Other common foods that are ‘super’ include onions, garlic, spinach, brussel sprouts, raw cacao and local honey. Virgin olive oil (particularly from Ibiza) is very good uncooked, but for cooking it is best to use coconut oil which is ‘super’ in many ways.

There are also more exotic super foods like quinoa, goji berries, chia seeds, acai and maca which can be found in health food stores. These are extremely powerful even in small doses. Fermented foods boost your immune system and your overall health by balancing the flora in your digestive system. Raw sauerkraut, kimchi, kefir, organic yogurt, tempeh and kombucha tea are some of the best sources for these essential probiotics. •
