Jazz Point Ibiza 2023: The Beat Goes On

By Jerry Brownstein
Jazz Point Ibiza is once again bringing some of the biggest names on the international jazz scene to perform here in Ibiza. This is the fourth annual Jazz Point Festival, and it will run from 12 to 15 October. David Moss and Adam Lenox of the Ibiza Music Agency work together with Joel Chriss Productions in New York to create these special events that are dedicated to making our island an important part of the international jazz scene.

The celebration begins at 17:00 on Thursday 12/10 with an Opening Party Jam Session hosted by the WOM Radio Cafe in Santa Eulalia. The Pere Navarro Band are the main performers, and they will be jamming with several of the international headliners, plus local stars. Pere Navarro is a trumpeter, pianist, composer and producer from Ibiza who is considered one of the top talents on the Spanish jazz scene.

The following night (13/10) will be a change of pace with an elegant musical dinner hosted at the beautiful Safragell hotel near San Lorenzo. The event starts at 20:00 and features two esteemed groups: The Juanma Trujillo Trio, with guest Javier Vercher, and the Albert Cirera Sextet. Venezuelan guitarist and composer Juanma Trujillo is at the forefront of creative improvised and experimental music. His group generates powerful musical statements that transcend the typical structures - engaging not only the ears, but also the mind and spirit. Albert Cirera is one of the most active and versatile saxophonists in the Iberian Peninsula. His 2017 album, A.C & Tres Tambors, was awarded Best Album of the Year in 2017 by Enderrock Magazine. Javier Vercher is widely respected as a first class tenor saxophonist, and a versatile jazz musician who is accomplished on many instruments.

Teatro Ibiza is the venue for Saturday night (14/10) at 21:00. This iconic home to live music on Ibiza presents famed headliners Alex Sipiagin & Ariel Bringuez performing with the Trevor Coleman Trio. Alex Sipiagin has an international reputation for playing the trumpet in a special way that brings out the instrument’s entire range of sound. He is also a consummate soloist on the flugelhorn. Since moving from Russia to the US in 1990, he has recorded numerous popular albums as a band leader. In addition, Alex is a multifaceted composer, arranger and producer, plus being a member of the faculty at New York University’s Steinhardt School. Ariel Bringuez is a Grammy Award winning saxophonist, pianist and composer, who graduated from the University of the Arts in Havana. He has performed with famous Latin Jazz bands that toured the world playing at important jazz festivals and clubs throughout Europe and the Americas. Trevor Coleman is a famed composer and trumpet player who is originally from New Zealand. He has composed and produced over 100 soundtracks for films and television, and earned three Emmy Award nominations for documentary scores.

“Bringing the Best International Jazz Stars to Ibiza”

On Sunday 15/10 at noon the Big Band Ciutat d’Eivissa, under the direction of Vicent Tur, will perform a free concert of jazz compositions in the style of the Big Band era.

At 20:00 on Sunday, the Festival returns to Can Ventosa for the final show which features two star-studded groups. The lovely duo of Marta Sánchez and María Grand is followed by the hot sounds of the Perico Sambeat Quartet with guest Javier Vercher. Marta Sánchez from Madrid took her talents to New York where she has established herself as an important jazz pianist. María Grand of Switzerland is a saxophonist, composer and singer who also moved to New York, and has since become an integral part of that city’s musical scene. Her first full- length album, “Magdalena” was hailed in Billboard magazine as one of “The 10 Best Jazz Albums of 2018”. Perico Sambeat is the most renowned Spanish saxophonist on the international scene. His prolific professional career as a musician, composer and arranger is legendary. Perico’s work explores various aspects of jazz and improvisation, ranging from bop to funk and hip hop. Of special note is the way he has ‘married’ jazz with flamenco music. He has recorded more than twenty albums under his name, and more than 150 as a collaborator with numerous famous jazz artists.

In addition to these amazing shows, some of the performers will be giving “Master Classes” for local musicians at Can Ventosa on Saturday 14/10 from 12:00. These are open sessions where the musical masters share their wealth of knowledge about jazz and the art of performing at the highest level.
